This piece is also inspired by “Das Unheimliche” of Sigmund Freud, but a composer approaches the theory from a different focus and aspect. Through this process, the composer attempts to deconstruct a hierarchy between the old concept of the role of pitch contents and noisy materials. To realize this process, the composer deconstructs string instruments and their methodological musical practice, and amplify the role of the performer’s body and traditional musical meaning. The instrument’s deconstruction and the adoption of other objects and preparations are centered as the performer’s agency in reconstructing and reinventing the string instruments are amplified through the entire piece. From the beginning, noisy objects resembling pitch materials are laid out and dominate the pitch contents. Towards the end, they slowly switch over to the sonic texture as pitch materials dominate noisy contents with more active gestures. Furthermore, this piece is based on a concept of “portrait abstract” which is a combination of portraiture and abstraction as a way to avoid the purely objective and subjective. I didn’t want to force my idea or personal expression onto the audience. Instead, I wanted to create a sonic environment, so that the audiences can create their own stories OR simply perceive an abstraction throughout this piece.
