Hunjoo Jung is a South Korean composer based in Germany, specializing in acoustic, electronic, and electroacoustic concert music, as well as intermedia installation art. Since 2020, he has been living and working in Germany as a freelance composer.
In his art, Jung confronts and challenges the misconceptions surrounding Asian culture as a sonic framework within contemporary music. His work explores the aesthetic intersections between Korean and Western art music, pushing the boundaries of both traditions. Recently, his focus has expanded beyond acoustic music to include complex structures that integrate interactive visuals, live video, video mapping, lighting, lasers, sensors, performative actions, and sculptural objects. These elements are combined with acoustic, electroacoustic, and electronic music to create immersive spatialized experiences.
Jung is also deeply engaged in the exploration of extended techniques, deconstructing traditional methodological and technological practices. His work reimagines commercial sounds and reinforces the performer’s body and traditional musical meaning. By employing real-time audio processing, he transforms sound into a non-referential, emergent act of mutual resonance.
